London versus New York

I heard the London Mayor, Ken Livingstone say last week that London has the fourth largest French population in the world (scroll down as the factoid is buried deep). Red Ken used it as evidence that London was emerging, once again, as a dominant world city. Sure Shanghai and Tokyo will have something to say about that, but his idea that London is threatening New York’s status as the world’s defacto capital is also expored by Ed Pilkington in today’s Guardian.

Pilkington states that while the Big Apple enjoys a larger slice of the world’s financial markets, London is catching up fast. More interestingly, he also notes that while there are over 200 languages spoken in New York, London supports more than 300. And that while 36% of New Yorkers are foreign born, that compares with 40% of Londoners.
