The big question
Is the battle between left and right no longer the defining intellectual debate of our times? This month’s Prospect Magazine asks 100 leading thinkers what they think might replace the old axis. Practically everyone has taken the bait.
The most common theme among the 100 thinkers is the battle between global and local politics is likely to be a defining debate. But there is no concensus on what might take the place of the old right/left axis. Cosmopolitanism vs patriotism? Nation state vs market state? Open society vs closed? All of the above? It could also be none of them. It could be that the 21st century, with all its financial inequality, could be defined by the intellectual battle that defined the last one, between left and right.
