The android speaks

Google surprised many people yesterday with its announcement to finally enter the mobile phone market. The biggest surprise of all is what it did not do. Most people had expected Google to announce a mobile phone to rival that of Apple’s iPhone. But instead it did something a lot smarter.
Google introduced a new mobile system called Android, which is potentially a lot more revolutionary than the iPhone. The really surprising thing is that, despite Nokia, Apple and Microsoft being absent from the Open Handset Alliance, the new platform essentially allows anyone to manufacture their own version of the “gPhone” as its software is open source. This is amazing stuff: a few months ago I wrote about similar notions of “open hardware”, (and here were attempting to build everything from mobile phones to motor cars. Then, the ideas sounded fringe at best. Google’s announcement advances such enlightened ideas by several years.
